Materials:
· overhead projector
· promethean board
· Discovery Education – Wild by Nature: Frogs
Set/Focus:
· ABK/RRL/IAL: How did you like Mr. Williamson yesterday? What kinds of frogs did you see? Have you seen any here in TN? T/P/S how much do we think we learned about frogs this week?
· LL: For writing workshop today, we are going to write something all together and then go back and edit it as a group. First, we are going to watch a film then write about it.
Instruction: (Balanced Literacy Approach – LEA modified)
1. Provide an experience: Students will watch “Wild by Nature: Frogs”. This short video incorporates information read within reading series along with further information.
2. Talk about the experience: Ask “So what do we think?” “What do we want to write about?”. Take a few ideas - partners
3. Record the student’s dictation: Tell students that I will be writing everything down that they want me to write down. I also may ask them to spell certain words for clarification.
4. Read the text aloud: point to each word as a read. Have students read text along with me for the second time.
5. Edit and revise text: After reading through text, students will look for existing adjectives within the text. Then, students will look at text to see where adjectives or comparative adjectives “juicy words” could be added into the text. Finally, sentences will be looked at for correct punctuation and capitalization.
Closure:
· Have students give me a thumbs up if they liked working in writer workshop as a group. Tell your partner the steps we went through to write and fix our passage. Give exit slip for students to complete
Assessment:
· Walk around as students talk about making their own sentence for the LEA
· Take up exit slip
Modifications:
· LEA was modified from text book version for numerous reasons.
1. Instead of dividing text into sentence strips, as a group we will identify any adjectives within the text. The addition of adjectives and comparative adjectives will be incorporated since that is the main grammar skill that is focused on in this week’s basal.
2. Then, we will edit the text looking for correct capitalization.
3. Again, we will edit the text looking for correct punctuation.
§ Both capitalization and punctuation are being edited because this is still a continuing skill that students work on daily.
